I had a blast this July 4th Holiday!

What better way to celebrate Independence Day than to take a ferry over to visit Fort Sumter, a National Monument of South Carolina!  I hopped on the Ferry at Liberty Square downtown, right next to the South Carolina Aquarium, and enjoyed a relaxing 30 minute narrated cruise to historic Fort Sumter.

As I boarded the ferry, I was greeted by a very friendly National Park Service Ranger who led me through the ship’s three levels where I found my perfect seat on the top deck. With the sun on my cheeks and the wind in my whiskers I was ready to set sail.  On our journey to the Fort we learned about many events which led to the beginning of the bloodiest war in America’s History. On April 12th, 1861 the first shots of the American Civil War were fired on Fort Sumter.

It’s hard to believe right here in our own backyard we have such a remarkable piece of history, preserved and waiting to share her stories of triumph and loss.   On the Fort we had an hour to tour the area and visit the very informative museum with historic artifacts and a souvenir shop.  As I stepped back in time and visualized Lincoln and Brig. Gen. Pierre G.T. Beauregard, I couldn’t help but be thankful for all the battles that have been fought and lives lost to make our country what it is.

I’m proud to be an American Fox.  Don’t forget to see Fort Sumter the next time you are in Charleston.
